23 Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the 522 Martyrs of the 20th Century in Spain were were beatified today at the Complejo Educativo de Tarragona in Tarragona, Spain, Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 6:00 pm Manila time. They were the Claretian Martyrs of Tarragona and the Claretian Martyrs of Fernan Caballero and Siguenza. The beatification rites and liturgy was presided by the Prefect of the Causes of Saints Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Cardinal Amato reminded that the beatification of the religious does not look for the culprits. He rather insisted that forgiveness is the “essence of Christianity” and said that nothing justifies a “fratricidal war or the death of others.” On the other hand, in a brief three-minute recorded speech, Pope Francis has joined the celebration with a message that asked everyone to imitate the martyrs because “we have to die sometimes so that we can go out of our own selves, of our own egoisms, of our welfare, and of our laziness.
The 522 martyrs of the twentieth century come from all over the country and belong to 33 different causes. Among them are three bishops, 82 diocesan priests, three seminarians, 412 consecrated and seven lay belonging to the different dioceses of Ávila, Barbastro, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Ciudad Real, Córdoba, Cuenca, Jaen, Lleida, Alcala de Henares, Madrid, Menorca, Siguenza-Guadalajara, Tarragona, Teruel, Tortosa and Valencia.
