Cherben and Fred Abducted from Staff House

Maluso, Basilan – Armed men on board a jungkung stormed CSFI staff house at Sitio Pangasaan, Brgy. Tairan, Lantawan Municipality, Basilan Province Wednesday evening, September 4, 2013 between 7:30 to 9:00 according to locals and friends and abducted two of our Claret Samal Foundation, Inc. (CSFI) workers  namely Frederick Banut and Cherben Masong. Both, who were working for the CSFI’s Literacy Program in the village, were staying at the CSFI staff house when the incident happened.

According to police report, “the gunmen stormed the house and dragged Fred and Cherben to the waiting watercraft” said Basilan provincial police director Senior Superintendent Mario Dapillosa. Capt Jefferson Somera, spokesman of the army’s 1st Infantry Division, said troops from the army’s 14th Special Forces Company have been deployed to search for Fred and Cherben. Somera said the troops were augmented by intelligence personnel monitoring the coastal areas of Lantawan, Maluso and Hadji Muhtamad towns. He said the military already coordinated with the rebel Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Moro National Liberation Front and with the local government units for the identification of the abductors. No lead and claim yet of who did the abduction and their purpose.
